Weed at my barn

by Linda
(Bowie, MD)

I see this weed on the roadside and thing it is kind of pretty. There is something similar in a roadside perrenial garden here though it is lower and has a larger flower. Right after I took this photo this plant developed a very prickly fruit sort of shaped like a kiwi. My goat eats many things but doesn't touch this plant.

Jimsonweed

The weed at your barn is Jimsonweed...Datura spp. It is toxic to animals...any barnyard with animals, you will see these left standing as the only green nearby. Animals seem to know not to eat it.
Evidently, some think it is pretty, but as an old farm girl, I have trouble growing even the new floriforous varieties. Like many plants we call weeds, this has been turned into a sale-able plant. The Angel Trumpet is a flower many grow in gardens, having been bred for the large numbers and size of flowers.
Since yours is the real weed, I would destroy all that you find. Seed lasts a long time in the ground so you may be pulling for a few years. The spiny seed pods do get very sharp!

Datura

I love it! Looks like a datura which is in the same family as a brugmansia, but the are not the same, as serious enthusiasts will firmly correct you (I have been corrected.LOL). They do well in containers and you can grow this in your house during the winter, and place outside in the spring again. I have several of these in my nursery as the propagate easily by cuttings, but I have seen Wal-Mart sell them for $50.00 for 3gal. trade containers(crazy!). They smell pretty and bloom at night, I would keep it if I were you. But dont eat any part of these or thier cousins as they are very poisonous and are sought after by people trying to get the ancient Shamen experience. Kind regards, Shell

It is a datura and Annette is partially right. Brugmansia is another genus of similar plants but the flowers are pendulous rather than upturned like datura. I always remember it as "datura faces the day" (to which you can add "Brugmansia faces away" if you like your mnemonic devices to rhyme). The goats are smart to avoid it because it is poisonous!

P.S.
This is a very sought after plant in my area...if you are cutting it down, I would love the seeds. I have paid $5.00 for one plant! I would not cut it if I were you, they are beautiful plants.

Although I cannot see the leaves very well in this picture, it looks very much like a datura (Angel Trumpet), Botanical name is Brugmansia. If the flowers are slightly fragrant and the leaves are not waxy, then my bet is this is what it is. After the flowers bloom, there will be a large seed pod that looks like a blown up puffer fish! Enjoy this beauty!

I found out
by: linda

Robin, I had asked several people over the last month and nobody knew what it was. This morning I asked my blacksmith since he's an outdoors guy. He said maybe Jimson Weed and presto there it was on google. I'll be cutting it down very soon. Those fruits (unripe now) are full of seeds. And apparently this isn't the best plant to have around animals although the goat seems to know to leave it alone. :)

pretty weed?

I have also been searching for the name of this plant. It started growing in with my black eyed susans at the end of my driveway and it is pretty but if it is invasive I'd rather get rid of it now before those seed pods break open. Mine is about 3 feet tall .
