Turtlehead

Turtlehead in the wild grows along ditches and stream sides and is moisture loving. Thrives in shade or semi shade, but will also grow in full sun.
It is very easy to root from cuttings, so is a breeze to propagate if you want a lot of it.

Of special note, it is the host plant for Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly larvae, and is a great addition to the butterfly garden.
The wild version in the east is white with pale pink edges, but also comes in a bright pink variety that you can get from local nurseries or mail order catalogs .

Chelone will do well in either Sun or Shade. I would avoid full afternoon sun if it is possible so the color is at its peak. We have used is in bright full shade areas and it does very well. I would probably not fertilize it much even if it seems to take awhile to spread since the 2nd or 3rd year it will need to be split. It is slow to emerge in the spring, but fortunately it is a fall bloomer. Plant annuals with it for a year or so to fill it in. Its great. Its a good one for poor soil. Put it in your trouble spots. Dry or wet doesn't seem to make any difference. A real garden gem!!!

Chelone lyonii - native to southeastern U.S., hardy to Zone 3, and I think it appreciates a moist soil, but like everyone has said, a really easy plant. And you have to love it blooming in September and October! A favourite of mine.

This is a Chelone and doesn't really need any special care it is pretty self sufficient.

Bunny .. Turtlehead plants are easy care ones .. They do like a bit of shade too but I think they can tolerate quite a bit of sun. If you do a search on the net you will have more information. They do multiply .. mine did a little too agressively so due to lack of room .. I was mean and kicked it out .. haha

The botanical name "Chelone" pronounced "Sha Low' Nay" This is at least a zone 4 perennial. It will spread out from underground and it attracts many bumblebees. It is a great fall bloomer and probably one of the hardiest and easiest plants I have had. It needs nothing, just be prepared to share a lot of it in its 3rd year as it will suddenly take off. If you have a spot, let it just go. We all love it at our house.
