When to plant garlic?

I live in Toronto and I'd like to grow garlic. What varieties do you recommend and when do I plant them?

Doug says that garlic is planted in the late fall along with all the other spring flowering bulbs. You "can" plant it in the spring if you plant as soon as the ground thaws but it's much better to do it in the fall.

As for varieties. I happen to love them all - it depends on what you want to use it for (storing or fresh cooking). Here's an article that explains everything you need to know about growing garlic.
