will this grow in hawaii leeward side (hotter and dryer of maui) I read that cockroaches dont like it and that the secret of horse whisperers is that they had tansy in their pcokets

We named our daughter Tansy after I saw the name in a book of names. Behind it, it said it was a weed like flower and that it repelled ants. I'm not sure if this is true or not. I think the fern like leaves are pretty, don't you? I live in Michigan, and it grows like crazy in my garden. I have to really watch it though, it spreads like wildfire! Every spring I dig up "chunks" of it to give to friends and it never seems worse for the wear. So to me its a flower!

My guess is Tansy also. I have some in my garden and you do have to be carefull where you plant it, it does reseed vigorously. And it forms a dense root that is hard to kill.

can be very nice if you have a spot you can give it to colonize; if it wanders, just dig it out with a (garden) fork to keep it within bounds. (Correction: when it STARTS to wander, etc.) Best is to have it along the wall of a building where you can mow it around the other sides of its patch. It's pretty, and its fragrance led it to be used as a "strewing herb" in early, dirt-floor households, and it was hung in bunches at glassless windows to discourage flies. It also dries well for winter arrangements. Just whatever you do, don't put it in a place with unlimited cultivated ground, like your vegetable garden, or mixed perennial bed. It sounds like that's what happened to the respondent who advised to rip it all out immediately! :-)

The latin name for this one is Tanacetum vulgare. This can be a very vigorous spreader. I dug mine out and threw it away. BEWARE!!
